Jon Armstrong is ready for a leap into the unknown as Rally Paraguay marks his first-ever appearance in South America. The Irishman admits everything feels foreign, from the road characteristics to the culture, as he prepares for the first of two consecutive WRC rounds on the continent.
In the build-up, Armstrong has tried to draw comparisons with rallies he knows, but he honestly admits there is no real match. "From what we have seen, it looks quite different to anything we have done before. The only comparison I can perhaps make is Kenya, although I still think it's going to be quite different," he said. He notes some similarities in the flow of the roads, with both featuring long straights and plenty of bumps.
The surface in Paraguay is another concern for Jon Armstrong. He describes it as muddy and polished when dry, but warns it could become very slippery in wet conditions. "So it's definitely going to be a different challenge," he added. His main goal is to do as much research as possible before the rally begins.
Armstrong's strategy for the weekend is simple: stay clean, especially on Friday's opening leg. That approach has been the team's recent pattern. "That has been our approach recently – trying to have a clean Friday and put ourselves in a good position for the rest of the weekend," he explained. He doesn't know what his pace will be like, but believes a clean weekend will bring a good result.
For Armstrong, this rally is not just a technical test but also a cultural experience. "It's also going to be a big experience for me because it's my first rally in South America. I've never rallied in North or South America before, so it's going to be a big change in terms of the culture and the whole experience," he said. With all the uncertainty, Armstrong seems ready to write a new chapter in his WRC career.
