Honda has confirmed that Joan Mir will sit out the upcoming MotoGP rounds in Japan and Indonesia as he continues to battle an undisclosed illness.
The Spanish rider had already missed the Austrian Grand Prix after blood tests revealed abnormalities following a weekend at Misano where he struggled with energy levels. Despite undergoing further tests at Dexeus University Hospital in Barcelona, the root cause of his symptoms remains unidentified.
Ongoing Health Concerns
Mir has been experiencing a range of symptoms affecting his energy and performance for several months, with a recent increase in severity. MotoGP Chief Medical Officer Dr. Angel Charte explained: "Joan Mir has been experiencing a variety of symptoms impacting his energy and performance for several months with a recent increase in severity, the cause is still unconfirmed at this time."
"Due to their persistence and severity, Mir has been undergoing a series of tests at the Dexeus University Hospital with the aim of reaching a definitive diagnosis. Due to the symptoms, the medical advice is to observe strict rest and undergo various treatments for the next 15 days. Consequently, I have advised him against participating in the Japanese and Indonesian Grands Prix. His condition will continue to be closely monitored by my team."
Impact on Honda and Replacement Options
Mir's absence is a setback for Honda, who are relying on his feedback to develop the RC213V. The team has not yet announced a replacement, but Takaaki Nakagami is the likely candidate after impressing as a stand-in at the Austrian Grand Prix, where he finished 13th and scored three points.
Nakagami was originally scheduled for a wildcard outing at Motegi, but that plan could be altered to give him more time on the factory bike. For now, the priority is Mir's recovery, and the team will continue to monitor his condition closely.
