Joan Mir will officially leave Honda to join Gresini Racing for the 2027 MotoGP season. The 2020 world champion will lead an entirely new rider line-up alongside rookie Dani Holgado.

The move places Mir on the same path as former team-mate Marc Marquez, who left Honda for Gresini in 2024. Marquez revived his competitiveness with three victories before securing a factory Ducati seat and winning the world championship last season.

Gresini will enter the new 850cc and Pirelli era with a completely revised pairing. Current riders Alex Marquez and Fermin Aldeguer are expected to continue their careers with KTM and VR46 Ducati respectively.

“Joan is a MotoGP world champion and his record speaks for itself. Dani is at the beginning of his journey, while Joan aims to rediscover his best sensations and make the most of his potential,” said team owner Nadia Padovani.

Padovani stressed that Gresini intends to provide a consistent reference point for both riders. Holgado will begin the adaptation process as a premier-class rookie, while Mir brings seven seasons of MotoGP experience and extensive knowledge of factory-team environments.

The transfer also reunites Mir with crew chief Frankie Carchedi. The pair worked together when Mir won the 2020 world championship with Suzuki, before the GSX-RR project was closed at the end of the 2022 season.

Mir joined Honda in 2023, but the limitations of the RC213V left him 22nd in the standings during his debut campaign and 23rd the following year. Across those two seasons, he failed to finish 23 grands prix, reflecting a combination of crashes, technical limitations and poor consistency.

Progress finally emerged in 2025 when Mir secured podium finishes at Motegi and Sepang. He also demonstrated speed this season by initially finishing second in Catalunya, before a post-race tyre-pressure penalty dropped him to fifth and handed the trophy to Aldeguer and Gresini.

Despite continuing to show flashes of performance, Mir has completed only four of the opening ten grands prix this season and sits 18th in the championship. That record reinforces the need for a different technical and operational environment after four difficult years with Honda.

Gresini offers Mir an opportunity to rebuild his career on Ducati machinery when MotoGP’s new regulations take effect in 2027. His reunion with Carchedi, the team’s record of helping riders recover their competitiveness and his status as a world champion make the transfer one of the most significant moves on the 2027 grid.
