Joan Mir Leaves Honda, Paving Way for Gresini in 2027

Joan Mir has been confirmed to leave Honda at the end of the 2026 MotoGP season, clearing the way for an expected move to Gresini Racing in 2027. The departure will conclude four seasons within the RC213V project without a sustained return to regular front-running contention.

Mir entered MotoGP with Suzuki in 2019 and won the world championship the following season. After Suzuki withdrew from the series, the Spaniard joined Repsol Honda in 2023 alongside Marc Marquez, at a time when the RC213V was already experiencing one of its most difficult technical periods.

Marquez’s move to Gresini in 2024 was not immediately followed by Mir, who instead signed a further two-year Honda contract. Progress finally became visible in 2025 when he secured his first Honda podiums at Motegi and Sepang, but a continued sequence of retirements has again restricted his consistency during the 2026 campaign.

Mir has scored only 26 points this season, compared with 71 for team-mate Luca Marini. However, he has still shown flashes of his previous speed, including fifth on the grid at COTA and a potential American Sprint podium before crashing while pursuing Pedro Acosta.

His strongest result of the season came in Catalunya, where he initially finished second before a tyre-pressure penalty dropped him to fifth. At the same time, Honda’s change in concession status and its preparations for the incoming 850cc regulations appear to have slowed the development of the RC213V, limiting the prospect of an immediate recovery.

Gresini will field an entirely new line-up in MotoGP 2027 after already signing Dani Holgado. Mir’s announcement is expected to follow, while Alex Marquez is set to move to KTM and Fermin Aldeguer is expected to join VR46 Racing Team. The switch would offer Mir a fresh start on Ducati machinery after a prolonged and difficult period with Honda.
