Rider Joan Mir is reportedly planning his departure from Honda to target a seat at Gresini Racing. The former world champion is seeking a career relaunch on a Ducati machine after a prolonged struggle to find consistent performance and competitiveness with the Japanese factory project.

The potential vacancy at Gresini Racing stems from the expected movement of Fermin Aldeguer, who is slated to join the VR46 team next season. With Daniel Holgado also expected to enter the MotoGP category, only one competitive seat remains open under the leadership of Nadia Padovani. This position has become a point of contention, as Mir is competing directly with Enea Bastianini for the opportunity.

A significant hurdle in these negotiations is the financial disparity between a factory contract and a satellite agreement. As a privateer entity, Gresini Racing does not possess the vast financial resources available to HRC. To secure the seat, Mir would likely be required to accept a substantial salary reduction, moving from a high-tier factory salary to a more modest compensation package typical of satellite teams.

Beyond financial constraints, a strategic "nationality quota" presents a major obstacle for Mir's arrival. Should the deal proceed, Ducati would find itself with five Spanish riders occupying six available bikes across its ecosystem. With Marc Marquez and Pedro Acosta in the factory team, and Holgado and Aldeguer in the satellite teams, adding Mir would create an unprecedented concentration of a single nationality, which could conflict with the manufacturer's global marketing and commercial strategy.

This situation has forced Enea Bastianini to explore alternative paths to secure his future on the grid. Reports suggest that Bastianini is now looking toward the Trackhouse team, which is affiliated with Aprilia. Such a move would shift the nationality balance, potentially resulting in an almost entirely Italian lineup for the Italian manufacturer across both their factory and satellite operations.

The current volatility in the rider market reflects a broader trend where athletes are prioritizing machinery stability over factory prestige. Mir's desire to switch to Ducati underscores the perceived technical superiority of the Desmosedici, as riders seek a platform that minimizes technical inconsistency. The final outcome for Mir will depend on whether Ducati is willing to overlook the nationality imbalance and whether Mir is prepared for the financial transition to a satellite role.
