The weekend at the Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace Interlagos brought a wave of high drama for George Russell. Although the British driver managed to salvage a strong fourth-place finish at the Brazilian Grand Prix, his journey to the chequered flag was far from straightforward.
Starting the race from seventh on the grid, Russell displayed exceptional pace and spent the majority of the afternoon fighting near the front. However, a major scare unfolded during a critical pit stop as he transitioned from intermediate tyres onto slick soft compounds.
Immediately after leaving his pit box, the cold rubber failed to generate sufficient mechanical grip on the lane surface. Russell dramatically spun his car in the pit lane, unable to complete a full 360-degree rotation due to power unit limitations, forcing him to execute a delicate multi-point maneuver to keep going.

Reflecting on the bizarre incident, the Mercedes charger admitted that cold tyres played a major role in the sudden loss of control. It was definitely the cold tyres, I am not entirely sure what happened right there, Russell explained when asked about the spin.
He further detailed the technical constraints he faced while trying to recover the car in tight quarters. And I could not do the full 360; I had no boost at that exact moment, so just some of the quirks of this power unit, but you know, the main thing from today is we got the constructors championship.
Despite the heart-stopping moment in the pit lane, the overarching narrative for Mercedes was one of ultimate triumph as they officially sealed the 2026 constructors world title.
A huge amount of work from all of the team to achieve that, Russell added regarding the team milestone. Obviously, we would have liked to have done it a bit more in style, but we got it over the line, which was the most important thing.
The weekend also served as a welcome personal reset for Russell, who in recent rounds had been overshadowed by newly crowned drivers champion and teammate Kimi Antonelli.
Emerging as the lead Silver Arrows driver in Brazil, Russell confessed that he is finally starting to feel like his old self again ahead of the upcoming Las Vegas Grand Prix.
I had really strong pace in the race, especially on the soft tyre, he concluded. We both struggled on the intermediate at the end, and that was quite strange. But yeah, feeling a bit more like myself again, and this weekend I think there was definitely pure pace there. Last weekend in Mexico, it was sort of just one lap at the right time. But looking forward to Vegas, a track where I have tended to do well.
