IndyCar to Use New Shell Renewable Fuel with Indiana Ethanol in 2027

When the green flag waves in the 2027 season, the NTT IndyCar Series will carry a new, greener mission. It's not just about a change of car colors or technical rules, but a fundamental shift in the fuel tank. The American racing series has officially announced it will use a new fuel formulation from Shell, this time relying on domestically sourced ethanol from the state of Indiana.

This decision is not without reason. Indianapolis Motor Speedway, IndyCar's headquarters, is indeed in the heart of Indiana. By utilizing ethanol from waste stream recapture, the series not only reduces its carbon footprint but also strengthens ties with the local community. This new formulation is described as a 'drop-in' change, meaning Chevrolet and Honda will need little to no adjustments to use the new fuel.

The fuel remains 100% renewable and promises a 70% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to standard renewable fuel baselines. This move aligns with the global trend of motorsport becoming increasingly environmentally conscious, as also seen in Formula 1 and MotoGP. However, IndyCar is taking a more local approach by partnering with Indiana's farmers and producers.

"Indiana is an agricultural and racing powerhouse, and this exciting partnership aligns two of our state's proudest industries," said Indiana House Speaker Todd Huston. "By using renewable ethanol sourced here in Indiana to fuel IndyCar, we're supporting Hoosier farmers and producers while showcasing Indiana innovation on a global stage. I'm proud to see Indiana agriculture powering the future of racing."

Shell has been IndyCar's official fuel supplier since the 2023 season, succeeding Speedway and Sunoco. The partnership includes all lubricants and oils used in the series, as well as fuel. Their relationship is further strengthened by sponsorship and livery designs from Shell on Team Penske cars throughout the year.

For Shell, racing fuel research is not just for the track. They emphasize that developments in motorsport have a significant impact down the production line, helping improve fuel quality for everyday consumers. Thus, innovation on the circuit is expected to flow to the streets, bringing cleaner energy solutions for all.
