IndyCar 'Definitely Would Consider' Supercars Collaboration for Australia Return

IndyCar president Jay Frye has revealed the series is open to collaborating with Supercars to bring racing back to Australia. This follows earlier reports that IndyCar had talks with Supercars in 2024 before the Adelaide Grand Final came to fruition.

Speaking on the Speed with Harvick and Buxton podcast, Frye confirmed the collaboration is more than just talk. "We definitely would consider that, and we've had several high-level conversations over the last several years about doing that," he said. However, he stressed that any Australian race must fit IndyCar's busy schedule and the TV broadcast window.

While the Australian prospect is tempting, Frye admitted the immediate priority is Mexico, capitalizing on the popularity of Pato O'Ward, the series' most popular driver. A race at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez in Mexico City has long been mooted but was delayed due to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, held across Mexico, the US, and Canada.

Beyond Mexico and Australia, IndyCar is also considering Brazil, Argentina, and Japan. Japan remains an attractive option due to its strong ties with engine supplier Honda. However, Frye emphasized that the core focus remains North America, with likely only two or three international events outside the US, including Canada.

"We continue to explore the international piece," Frye said. "I wouldn't be surprised if at some point we have two or three events outside the United States. But they have to be the right events, the right locations, and make sense for teams to travel."

Frye also highlighted the logistical challenges teams face when racing abroad, as seen with NASCAR's trip to Mexico. "Even when NASCAR went to Mexico, the nightmares of traveling are challenging. It takes a big piece out of the schedule on both ends of the weekend," he explained.

With IndyCar's historical races in Australia (last in 2008 at Gold Coast), Japan, and Brazil, Frye is optimistic about international races returning. "We've been to Australia, Japan, and Brazil. Those are places we'd love to visit again," he added. IndyCar continues its season at Markham on August 17.
