Iker Lecuona saw a golden opportunity for a WorldSBK Superpole Race victory slip through his fingers at Estoril due to unpredictable wind conditions. Having launched brilliantly off the line, the Spanish rider seized control of the race from the very first moments, leaving his competitors scrambling behind him.
However, the commanding lead evaporated on the third lap of the encounter. As he braked hard for the tricky first corner, a sudden gust disrupted his machine, forcing him wide and nearly sending him tumbling into the gravel trap. Quick reactions allowed him to rejoin the asphalt just ahead of Miguel Oliveira, salvaging an eventual second-place finish.
The chaotic moment handed the initiative straight to Nicolo Bulega, who comfortably cruised to the chequered flag to claim yet another milestone victory. Speaking to the WorldSBK world feed after the race, Lecuona expressed his frustration regarding the fluctuating weather factor that derailed his charge.
I didn't expect that huge mistake from myself, Lecuona admitted. The thing is that the wind isn't constant, sometimes it arrives stronger, and I didn't expect it so I had a lot of pick-up on the rear and I could not stop. I almost arrived to the gravel, so when I came back I said I f*cked my race.
Despite the costly error, Lecuona remained upbeat about the competitive pace discovered over the weekend. Meanwhile, Bulega's triumph marked his 28th victory of the campaign, breaking the previous single-season win record set by Alvaro Bautista, while cementing an unprecedented consecutive winning streak for Ducati.
