MotoGP has officially confirmed that the Hungarian Grand Prix will not be part of the 2027 season. The decision comes after two years of racing at Balaton Park, which drew criticism for its tight layout and poor attendance. The event returned to Hungary in 2025 for the first time since 1992, but the slow-speed circuit failed to win over fans and riders alike.
The 2026 race was further marred by asphalt break-up, adding to the negative feedback. Neither event at Balaton Park attracted large crowds, and the 2026 edition suffered from a promoter change. Plans to move the race to the Hungaroring from 2027 had been considered, but MotoGP has now decided against it.
In a brief statement, MotoGP said: "MotoGP Group can confirm that the Hungarian Grand Prix will not feature on the 2027 calendar. However, Hungary continues to be an important destination for the championship, and MotoGP Group is committed to exploring future opportunities to return in collaboration with the relevant authorities."
The announcement precedes the full 2027 calendar reveal, set for this Friday. MotoGP has already confirmed that the Thai Grand Prix will open the season on 5-7 March, with the Valencia finale scheduled for 26-28 November. The 2027 calendar is expected to feature the return of the Argentine Grand Prix, moving from Termas de Rio Hondo to Buenos Aires.
Additionally, the Austrian Grand Prix will return to its August slot in 2027 after being held in September this year with lower attendance. Meanwhile, the fate of this year's Qatar Grand Prix remains uncertain due to the ongoing war in Iran. Carmelo Ezpeleta, CEO of MotoGP Group, recently stated at the Austrian Grand Prix that the plan is still to race in Qatar in November, but many countries are advising against travel to the region.
With Hungary dropped, MotoGP now has more time to find a suitable replacement venue. Fans will hope this decision leads to improved racing quality in the future. All eyes are now on the full calendar launch, which will reveal all the destinations for the 2027 season.
