Luca Marini admits Honda is "missing some little pieces to enjoy" results in MotoGP 2026. After a promising end to last season with two podiums via Joan Mir, the RC213V has managed only a best finish of fifth this year. Honda also trails by 29 constructors' points compared to the same stage last season.
Ahead of his move to Tech3 KTM next season, Marini believes the loss of momentum is largely due to HRC "understandably" shifting development focus to the new 850cc/Pirelli bike for 2027. "From 2024 to now is completely different in every aspect. It was like a revolution in a very good way," he said.
The regulation change for next year is seen as a pity by Marini. "I think the change of rules for next year is a pity. Because we could do much more in 2026 if the rules kept going like this. Even if they changed the riders, they would improve the project, keep listening to me, and keep working on the bike. While unfortunately, now all the effort is put on the new 2027 bike, which of course I understand," explained the Italian.
Marini, currently 11th overall and Honda's leading rider, added that results this season are not what they expected after two years of hard work. "When I arrived at Honda, we needed to work together to build something. Now that it's ready, it's still missing some little pieces to enjoy a little bit more with the results. Because we enjoy a lot the time in the garage, the atmosphere is fantastic, but we're missing some bigger results and the opportunity to work for it in every weekend," he said.
Marini and teammate Joan Mir will lose their factory seats to a new HRC lineup featuring Fabio Quartararo and either Diogo Moreira or David Alonso. When asked who deserves the second factory ride, Marini gave his assessment. "For me, they are both super good riders, very talented. Diogo is doing everything very well; I'm racing against him at this moment. David, when he comes to MotoGP, maybe he will be faster or slower; we don't know. But they will be here in MotoGP for a long time because they have great talent and incredible speed," he said.
Marini personally backs Moreira, who sits 14th in the championship and was Honda's top rider at Aragon with seventh in the Sprint and ninth in the Grand Prix. "Diogo is riding well, in the data he is doing everything correct. So why not him?" Marini concluded. The final decision rests with HRC to determine the future of the second factory seat.
