Honda 2026 F1 Crisis: The Real Reasons Behind Aston Martin Struggles

The severe performance crisis hitting Aston Martin under the new 2026 Formula 1 technical regulations has exposed deep underlying issues within their Japanese power unit supplier. High expectations surrounding the machinery penned by Adrian Newey quickly evaporated as Fernando Alonso and his stablemate found themselves fighting in the lower midfield due to a mix of aerodynamic limitations and power unit deficits.

According to reports from FormulaPassion, the turbulent situation prompted outgoing Honda Racing Corporation (HRC) motorsport boss Koji Watanabe to address the technical roadblocks hindering their competitive edge. Based on FIA performance metrics for the ADUO, the Honda power unit clearly lags behind competitor power plants in raw horsepower output.

Watanabe explained that their primary hurdle centers on a deficit in raw power, prompting them to target gains through the ADUO-2 spec update. While they successfully reached their target power levels, tweaking the combustion process unfortunately compromised drivability, returning handling characteristics to earlier, less refined stages.

This performance lag stems directly from a delayed start in the 2026 power unit project timeline. The late formal confirmation of their official Formula 1 return back in 2023 created a snowball effect, resulting in nearly two years of lost development time compared to established rival manufacturers.

Despite these setbacks, internal evaluations indicate that battery and hybrid system objectives have been successfully met according to initial plans. The immediate priority moving forward remains bridging the performance gap on the internal combustion engine side to fight back up the grid.
