Shane van Gisbergen and Austin Hill were involved in another on-track incident during the NASCAR Cup Series race at Kansas. On Lap 110 of 267, van Gisbergen slid up in front of Hill to take 26th, causing Hill to hit the wall and lose two positions to Tyler Reddick and Alex Bowman. The incident sparked an angry radio outburst from Hill.
Hill's spotter, Derek Kneeland, tried to calm him: "Settle down, all good here." But Hill fired back, "What do you mean, settle down? Ha!" The tension escalated. This is just the latest in a long list of run-ins between the pair. They were previously summoned to the NASCAR hauler to discuss their San Diego shunt that left van Gisbergen frustrated.
Kneeland reminded Hill not to get wound up. "You can't keep racing each other like this every week. We're going to have destroyed cars and no finishes. Whether he's being a dick or we are, we've got to be able to finish. We're decent, I know this run went to shit, but we've got to get it back together here. Just keep it together."
Hill didn't take the advice well. "I don't want to hear it. Honestly, I don't want to freakin' hear it from you. Just spot," he retorted. This incident adds to the growing feud between Hill and van Gisbergen, who have frequently battled hard on track.
Van Gisbergen went on to finish 24th while Hill was 26th, both one lap down on race winner Kyle Larson. After the race, Hill explained his car's handling issues. "Our Cheddar's Scratch Kitchen Chevrolet had speed on the long run, but we struggled on fire off. For the first 15-20 laps, our car was really tight and it would take too long to come in. At the same time, we were at the limit of the rears at the end of a run. If we could have found a way to not lose so much ground at the beginning, I think we could have had a solid finish because most runs, we would drive back forward at the end. We'll learn from today and try to come back better next season."
The incident highlights the intense competition in the NASCAR Cup Series, especially between two aggressive drivers. Hill's radio outburst shows the pressure drivers face in tight racing. Meanwhile, Richard Childress Racing must quickly improve performance to contend for the rest of the season.
The NASCAR Cup Series continues at Las Vegas on October 5 (AEDT). We'll see if the tension between Hill and van Gisbergen heats up again on track.
