Silverstone, 2026 – The high attrition rate at the British MotoGP round has become a talking point. Of the 23 starters, only 16 riders crossed the finish line, the joint-second-lowest number of finishers this season, behind only Germany's 15.

Interestingly, the same number of finishers (16) also occurred in France, Hungary, and the Netherlands. However, one key difference at Silverstone was the presence of Augusto Fernandez as a wildcard, who also appeared at Assen. Without him, Britain, Germany, and the Netherlands each saw seven retirements.

Several factors contributed to the high retirement rate, according to Pol Espargaro, who cited track temperature as a primary cause. "The track was hotter than normal for Silverstone," he explained. "The front tyre was on the limit, and there was a lot of degradation on the rear. With the medium tyre being harder than the soft, there's less support, so the front is pushing more. All the crashes were pretty much the same."

Jack Miller offered a different perspective, feeling the track was "more slippery" on race day. "Maybe it's from temperature or Moto2 rubber, or everyone being on the mediums," he said. "It's a long race here, and this year it was even harder to keep the tyres under the thing."

The data suggests that a combination of track temperature, tyre choice, and the physically demanding circuit created the perfect recipe for crashes. With only 16 finishers, this race stands as one of the most brutal of the season, providing valuable lessons for teams ahead of the next round.
