Colton Herta has dealt a significant blow to his Formula 1 aspirations by declaring he has no interest in another season of Formula 2, casting uncertainty over his future with Cadillac. The American, who made the switch from IndyCar to Europe this year to join Hitech in F2 while also serving as a development driver for Cadillac, made his intentions clear when asked about his 2027 plans.
“I think we’ll have to wait and see,” Herta said. “But I have no interest in another year of Formula 2.” The decision comes amid a bruising campaign for the 26-year-old, who sits 19th in the standings with just three rounds remaining and has scored points only once in his last 13 races. His struggles were compounded in Madrid, where a qualifying crash sidelined him for both races, further highlighting a season in which consistent pace has been elusive.
Herta admitted the lack of competitiveness has been frustrating. “Whatever I do and whatever series I drive in, I want to be competitive,” he said. “And that’s why it’s simply frustrating when that’s not the case. It’s frustrating when the results don’t come and it’s difficult to find the necessary pace. But yes, for me it’s mainly just frustrating to show up here almost every weekend and then not have any pace.”
Despite his F2 woes, Herta has continued to receive opportunities with Cadillac, driving its F1 car in practice sessions in Barcelona, Budapest, and Monza. However, his Monza outing proved costly when a hydraulic issue ended his running after just one flying lap, preventing him from completing the 100 kilometres required to earn a Super Licence point. Herta believes he remains two points short of eligibility for an F1 seat.
“Nothing concrete has been announced yet. The early exit in Monza has obviously thrown a wrench in our plans,” he said. “So we’ll have to wait and see what happens. At the moment, one more session is planned.” Cadillac has previously expressed interest in placing an American driver in one of its F1 seats, with Herta long viewed as a prime candidate. His decision to rule out another F2 season therefore leaves his path to F1 beyond 2026 unclear.
Herta, however, insists his F2 results should not be taken as a direct indicator of his F1 potential, pointing to the substantial differences between the two cars. “They are indeed quite different. The driving style that makes you fast in a Formula 1 car is quite different from that in a Formula 2 car,” he explained. “You’re looking forg” (statement truncated).
