Todd Hazelwood showcased his class in the Trans Am Australia season opener at Queensland Raceway, Ipswich. The Ford Mustang #1 driver crossed the line 1.3 seconds ahead of Blake Tracey (#5 Mustang), with Tim Blanchard (#10 Mustang) completing the podium after a strong run.
The race start was chaotic. Championship leader Jarrod Hughes made a slow getaway, losing positions. Nash Morris capitalized to move into second at Turn 1, but chaos erupted at Turn 2 when Nathan Herne, Morris, and Hughes made contact, slowing the pack and triggering heavy collisions involving James Moffat, Jack Smith, and Alice Buckley. Six cars ended up in the gravel, and Smith got stuck, prompting a safety car.
Moffat, Hughes, and Buckley were able to continue at the back, while Smith was forced to retire a few laps later. Commentator Matt Naulty described the incident vividly: "James Moffat was picked up like a front-end loader. Somehow he got away, and so did Nathan Herne. For Jack Smith, he is parked."

At the restart, Hazelwood controlled the field, building a comfortable margin over Tracey. The battle for third heated up between Blanchard, Cheney, Brock Paine, and Cody Brewczynski. In the closing laps, Tom Davies and Cheney made contact on the pit straight before Davies passed Paine. Meanwhile, Hughes mounted a recovery drive, carving through the field and finally passing Herne for 12th on the penultimate lap with a bold move at Turn 5.
Davies (#42 Camaro) finished sixth, ahead of Paine (#33 Camaro) and Harrison Sellars (#60 Mustang). Ben Bargwanna (#97 Mustang) took ninth after a quiet race, while Elliott Cleary (#2 Mustang) rounded out the top ten in his first start in over 12 months.
In the Cup class, Diesel Thomas (#18) clinched victory after a thrilling multi-lap battle with Brandon Madden (#57), who finished second by 0.5 seconds. Caleb Paterson (#101) led most of the race but had to settle for third. Scott Andriske (#4) and Josh Thomas (#3) completed the top five, with Josh Thomas impressing from 15th on the grid.
Race two of the Trans Am Australia at Ipswich takes place on Saturday at 11:45 AEST. With this performance, the season is set to be fiercely competitive.
