Technical drama overshadowed the opening stages of the Formula 1 weekend at the Sepang circuit in Malaysia, as the season's first wet-weather conditions triggered an unexpected software glitch. Top-tier drivers such as Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen were left describing their bizarre on-track experiences as resembling a toy go-kart race. The chaotic situation stemmed from the new regulations reducing the hybrid engines' power output from 350kW to 250kW in wet conditions, an aspect that had apparently lacked sufficient prior testing by teams.
The intricate issue arose as cars began stalling out on track during the formation lap. The FIA subsequently explained that the anomaly was linked to software parameters loaded by teams to enable more controllable torque under damp conditions. Because of this software failure, proceedings experienced a 40-minute delay while engineers scrambled to deploy a software update before the Grand Prix could properly get underway on the Sepang tarmac.
Recalling the surreal incident to media outlets including Motorsport Week, Max Verstappen expressed his thoughts on the immense complexity embedded within modern power units. The reigning world champion momentarily lost power before glancing in his mirrors to find a bizarre grid-wide crawl. “That’s the problem that we have. You know, these engines are so complicated and a lot of software is implemented,” explained Max Verstappen regarding the moment he inadvertently triggered the system anomaly.

The comical yet concerning slow-speed procession saw multiple cars packed tightly together on the straightaways. Lewis Hamilton echoed the sentiment, noting the surreal nature of the crawling field. “At some point we were five-wide on the straight because we couldn’t understand what was going on,” Max Verstappen continued, while Lewis Hamilton detailed having to completely stop his car, shut down the engine, and perform a full system restart out on the circuit—a procedure he had never previously executed during a race.
Despite the chaotic opening sequence, the race reached its conclusion with Max Verstappen converting his pole position into a race victory. Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton completed a remarkable charge through the field after starting on slick tyres on a damp surface, ultimately climbing up to finish third behind Andrea Kimi Antonelli. Concluding the weekend, Lewis Hamilton firmly stressed that he hopes valuable lessons are learned to completely eradicate the software glitch moving forward.
