Lewis Hamilton has once again grabbed attention, not for his on-track action, but for his comments about Fernando Alonso. Ahead of the Bahrain Grand Prix held at the Sepang International Circuit, Malaysia, Alonso officially signed a contract extension with Aston Martin until the end of 2027. This decision means he will remain in Formula 1 until he is 46 years old.
In the Sepang paddock, Alonso's extension became a hot topic. Many drivers reacted, including Hamilton. "There's a lot of drivers at the front who can't compete with Fernando, in pure talent. He's just not able to show that at the moment," Hamilton told the media.
The seven-time world champion's comments quickly went viral on social media. Fans praised Hamilton's sportsmanship. "Game recognises game," one fan wrote on Reddit. "I like it when they occasionally say nice things about each other," another added. Someone else joked, "Heartwarming to see the youngins getting along," and "Ferwis is alive and kicking. Last year grandpa defended unc when he was struggling in red. Now unc is defending grandpa."
On Autosport's Instagram post, similar comments flowed. "Lewis proving why he is a legend..." and "I hope Aston can right the ship for Fernando so he can fight for points again." This praise shows the immense respect fellow drivers have for Alonso.
Alonso made his F1 debut at the 2001 Australian Grand Prix and has made 440 grand prix starts. Over his career, he has secured championship titles in 2005 and 2006, as well as 32 grand prix wins, 106 podium finishes, and 22 pole positions. He has driven for Minardi, Renault, McLaren, Ferrari, Alpine, and now Aston Martin.
Unfortunately, the Silverstone-based team is struggling with car and power unit issues in 2026. As a result, they sit 10th in the constructors' championship with only three points. Nevertheless, Alonso's contract extension shows the team's faith in him.
Hamilton's praise is not just lip service. It is a recognition from a world champion of Alonso's extraordinary talent, who may not have had a competitive car. Moments like this remind us that behind fierce competition, there is genuine respect among drivers.
