Lewis Hamilton is no longer hiding from reality. After retiring from the 2026 Spanish Grand Prix with a brake failure, the Ferrari driver effectively conceded that the Formula 1 championship is Mercedes' and points leader Kimi Antonelli's to lose. "There's no stopping them this year," he said flatly, yet meaningfully.
The brake failure in Madrid was a heavy blow. Starting from fourth, Hamilton held his position until an incident with Max Verstappen, who cut the opening chicane. Although Verstappen was eventually told to give the place back, the incident sparked fury on the Red Bull radio. Hamilton himself considered it fair racing. "It was pretty good racing to be honest," he said calmly.
But the real problem came from within the Ferrari cockpit. Entering Turn 5, the brake pedal suddenly went long and the car failed to slow as it should. Hamilton brushed the barrier, then the pedal came back to normal, before he lost brakes completely and was forced to retire on lap six. "I don't really know where that's come from," he admitted.
The result saw Hamilton's gap to Antonelli in the standings widen to 76 points, from just 32 after the British GP two months ago. With Mercedes' consistent and dominant performance, Hamilton's mission to win a record eighth title in his first season with Ferrari is now on the ropes. He acknowledged Mercedes' superiority. "They've done a phenomenal job and they deserve it," he added.
Hamilton also predicted that Mercedes' advantage will be even more pronounced at the long-straight Baku circuit in Azerbaijan. "I don't really know what to expect at that track, but I'll give it everything," he said. "Mercedes will be very strong."
With eight races remaining, the math hasn't completely closed the door on Hamilton. But psychologically, his statement signals a shift from title pursuit to damage limitation for Ferrari. The brake failure in Spain was a harsh reminder that reliability remains a scourge for the Maranello team.
For Mercedes and Antonelli, their dominance this season is not just about speed, but also consistency and reliability. If this trend continues, the 2026 world championship is only a matter of time. As for Hamilton, despite realistically conceding, he vows to fight until the end.
