The race weekend at the Marina Bay Circuit exposed a difficult reality for Lewis Hamilton during a tense qualifying session. After displaying encouraging pace through the early phases of the sprint shootout, the British driver saw his hard work undone by a self-admitted strategy miscalculation in SQ3.

Opting for a distinct run plan compared to his rivals proved to be a costly gamble. While the initial speed displayed in the opening two segments suggested a strong grid position was within reach, the final shootout session at the demanding street circuit turned into an uphill battle.

"Well, it was looking good in Q1 and Q2, and then I don't really know where it went," Hamilton reflected after stepping out of the cockpit. He openly shouldered the blame for the tactical deviation that ultimately compromised his flying lap.

"We did a slightly different run plan from the others; it was my choice, and I think we got that wrong. But ultimately, the car was very oversteery on that last lap," he explained regarding the handling difficulties that wrecked his final attempt.

Technical complications multiplied when the team switched from medium compound tires to the softs for the decisive run. The transition introduced severe balance issues, robbing the rear axle of necessary traction while the front end gripped aggressively, creating a sharp snap oversteer condition.

"On the mediums, it was good. Just much different on the soft. Lots of grip, but only on the front and none at the rear. Obviously, I had the pace in the first two sessions, and then all of a sudden, I didn't have the grip on the rear for some reason on that last lap, so it's what it is," Hamilton added.

Consequently, the seasoned world champion is forced to settle for sixth place on the grid, lining up on the third row for the sprint race. Meanwhile, his Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc capitalized on a cleaner run to secure a third-place start on the row directly ahead.

The focus now shifts toward data analysis and set-up adjustments as the team prepares to address the rear stability issues before the main Grand Prix qualifying session takes place on Saturday following the sprint event.
