Isack Hadjar has revealed that his Azerbaijan Grand Prix performance was more cautious than it appeared, despite securing a podium finish. The Red Bull driver, who missed three races due to a wrist injury, impressed by outqualifying teammate Max Verstappen and finishing third.
Hadjar admitted he took a very measured approach throughout the weekend at the demanding Baku City Circuit. "I took it really, really slowly the whole weekend because it’s a demanding track to come back to," he said. "I don’t want to be in the wall." His strategy paid off, though he also benefited from Oscar Piastri’s lock-up on Lap 39.
The podium in Baku marked a significant moment for Hadjar, who had previously stood on the podium in Monaco but only after a lengthy appeal process. "The Monaco podium was a podium, but it was not on pure pace," he explained. "This is my first time with the team that I actually get to do a very clean weekend and fight my way into that podium. So it feels like a real first."
Hadjar also credited the improved performance of the Red Bull car. "The way I left the car in Budapest, I was not really satisfied. And coming back now after a couple of races, definitely made a step," he added.
With this result, Hadjar proved he can compete at the highest level, even against a driver of Verstappen’s caliber. He hopes the Baku podium will provide valuable momentum for the next race in Malaysia. "It gives me good confidence heading into the next races," he concluded.
The podium also has implications for the drivers’ championship, as Hadjar solidifies his position in the top five. Red Bull gains crucial points in the constructors’ battle, especially with Verstappen also performing strongly.
Hadjar’s cautious approach to the challenging Baku track serves as a valuable lesson for other young drivers, demonstrating that patience and strategy can yield maximum results even when not fully fit.
