Haas' decision to secure the services of a driver with strong ties to Ferrari for the 2027 Formula 1 World Championship has sparked significant discussion behind the scenes. The team officially confirmed that Esteban Ocon will be replaced by Formula 2 championship leader Rafael Camara for the 2027 season.
This strategic move had been widely anticipated given the driver's connection to Ferrari, the Italian manufacturer supplying power units to the American-owned squad. However, the situation carried an extra layer of complexity because Haas also maintains a very close partnership with Toyota, with the Japanese manufacturer actively pushing for one of its young proteges to secure a premier class race seat.
Speaking to the media following the official announcement, Haas team principal Ayao Komatsu detailed how Toyota Gazoo Racing boss Akio Toyoda reacted to the major news. Komatsu revealed that from the very beginning of their discussions in 2024, Toyota had made it clear they were keen to place one of their own drivers into a race seat.

To prevent any misunderstandings, Komatsu flew to Tokyo to meet Akio Toyoda in person before any contracts were signed. He wanted to ensure there was absolute clarity regarding the team's selection criteria, emphasizing that merit and pure speed would remain the absolute priority above financial backing.
Komatsu told Akio Toyoda, "If I choose the driver who is not the fastest, who is not the best, to Toyota, they’re going to be labelled as, 'Okay. Toyota just poured the cash in to get their driver into F1.' Then this driver is going to be labelled as a Toyota pay driver. And then, as the Haas F1 team, we’re not going to produce the results that we should be producing because this guy is not the fastest guy."
Despite this strict stance, Toyota still saw one of its own contenders fight for the opportunity. Ryo Hirakawa was evaluated alongside other contenders such as Jack Doohan and Leonardo Fornaroli before the final decision was made in favor of Camara.
Komatsu noted that total transparency from day one ensured the Toyota chief remained completely supportive of the professional evaluation process. "Initially, when we told him the plan to assess Ryo Hirakawa alongside some other drivers, he was actually very happy to say, 'Wow, you know, Haas is doing it properly in this way. He was very, very happy," Komatsu concluded.
