Guevara Wins Dramatic Austrian Moto2 2026, Cuts Points Gap

Izan Guevara delivered a stunning performance at the Austrian Moto2 2026, winning the race at the Red Bull Ring after starting from fifth on the grid and immediately taking the lead. This victory, his second of the season, significantly cuts his points deficit to championship leader Manuel Gonzalez.

Guevara, riding for the Blu Cru Yamaha team, wasted no time in hitting the front once the lights went out. He was initially followed by Ivan Ortola, but the QJMotor rider gradually slipped back. Filip Salac, who had secured pole with a record-breaking lap, charged forward and put pressure on Guevara. Salac ultimately finished second, 1.728 seconds behind, marking his fourth podium of the year for American Racing.

Behind them, David Alonso put in an impressive ride. After passing Ortola, he challenged Salac in the closing stages and secured the final podium spot for the Aspar team. Alonso had a scare at the same corner where he crashed last year but managed to stay upright. Meanwhile, Gonzalez, who started second, had to settle for fifth after being overtaken by Alonso and Ortola. He still leads the championship, but his advantage has been reduced.

In the closing laps, Guevara had a moment at turn nine, running wide and nearly crashing. Fortunately, he had enough of a gap to bring his bike home safely. After the race, Guevara ran out of fuel and received assistance from Alonso, the marshals, and Alex DeAngelis to return to parc ferme.

Alonso Lopez finished sixth after a huge wheelie off the line, followed by Daniel Holgado in seventh and Barry Baltus of Fantic in eighth. Deniz Oncu showed improvement with a ninth-place finish for Elf Marc VDS, just one position shy of his best result this season. Luca Lunetta was the top rookie in tenth, ahead of Daniel Munoz and Jose Antonio Rueda.

With this result, Gonzalez still leads the standings, but Guevara is closing in. The Moto2 title fight is heating up as the season progresses. Meanwhile, Salac and Alonso continue to demonstrate their podium consistency.

The Red Bull Ring also witnessed a new all-time lap record set by Filip Salac in practice with a time of 1'32.381, surpassing the previous record held by Manuel Gonzalez. This underscores just how competitive this season is.
