George Russell is facing a costly grid penalty at the upcoming Singapore Grand Prix after suffering a power unit failure during the closing stages of last weekend's race in Sepang. The setback forces Mercedes to introduce a fresh power unit, pushing the British driver beyond his season allocation of four components.

Russell was running strongly in third place behind the safety car before his power unit let go, ruining what had looked like a certain podium finish. Several outlets have reported that a Mercedes spokesperson confirmed the enforced change, which arrives at the worst possible venue given the notorious difficulty of overtaking around the Marina Bay Street Circuit.

Despite the penalty awaiting him for Sunday's main grand prix, Russell will be entirely free of sanctions during Saturday's sprint action, where his starting slot will be decided strictly by sprint qualifying. Dilansir dari Speedcafe, the timing of the failure has also severely compounded his championship ambitions against title rival Kimi Antonelli.

Antonelli secured a second-place finish in Malaysia to extend his championship lead to 84 points over Russell with just seven rounds remaining. While the Italian rookie cannot mathematically seal the crown in Singapore, a maximum points haul combined with a scoreless weekend for Russell would place him on the cusp of clinching the title at the following round in Austin.

Mercedes had initially scheduled an upgraded power unit package for the upcoming United States Grand Prix utilizing Formula 1’s development allowances. However, the unexpected failure in Sepang has forced the engineering squad to re-evaluate those plans, potentially bringing the upgraded specification forward to Singapore if preparations are completed in time.

Addressing the mechanical failure, Mercedes deputy team principal Bradley Lord explained the initial findings from the factory inspection. "Our investigation so far, we’ve got the car back, we’ve been able to do a first inspection, it’s clearly a mechanical failure on the power unit side," Lord stated. "Exactly what the root cause is we still need to determine, but the consequence was clear for all to see."
