Formula 1, Sportrik Media - George Russell has received an official warning from the stewards at the 2026 Australian Grand Prix after breaching the practice start procedure at Albert Park Circuit, with the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team driver citing “sun haze” as the reason for the mistake.
Russell was summoned to the stewards for a second time during the day after earlier being involved in an incident with rookie Arvid Lindblad, which resulted in a reprimand. The latest investigation concerned a practice start he performed outside the designated zone outlined by race director Rui Marques.
According to the official stewards’ report, Russell admitted that he carried out the practice start in the wrong area, which is defined under Item 14.1 of the race director’s competition notes.

“The driver admitted that he performed a practice start outside the designated practice start area defined in Item 14.1 of the Race Director’s Competition Notes,” the stewards’ statement explained.
“However, he explained that due to sun haze he was unable to clearly see the grid boxes and believed the correct location was where rubber marks were visible on the asphalt.”
After reviewing onboard footage from Russell’s car as well as CCTV footage from the circuit, the stewards acknowledged that visibility of the grid markings was difficult under the lighting conditions at the time.
“Having viewed the driver’s onboard and CCTV footage, we accept that the sighting of the grid box was difficult given the light conditions,” the statement added.
Despite recognising the visibility issue, the stewards concluded that Russell had positioned his car significantly beyond the designated area, even ahead of the protection provided by the pit wall.
The panel therefore determined that the driver had failed to follow the race director’s instructions, especially after teams had previously been reminded to strictly comply with the practice start procedures.
As a result, Russell was issued with a warning consistent with penalties applied for similar infringements in previous Formula 1 events.
