George Russell set the pace in the sole practice session at the Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix on a dusty Marina Bay street circuit. The Briton topped the timesheets despite already knowing he will start Sunday's grand prix from the back of the grid after taking on a brand-new engine.
The Mercedes driver ended up 0.198 seconds faster than Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, who finished the session in second place. Meanwhile, Lando Norris claimed third for McLaren, finishing 0.273 seconds adrift of the benchmark time established during the opening running.

Lewis Hamilton wound up fourth and nearly half a second off the pace after aborting his final soft tyre run. The seven-time world champion had been set to improve his lap time prior to suffering a major slide through the challenging Turn 10 section.

Mercedes carried out a back-to-back comparison during the Singapore weekend in a bid to understand whether its major upgrade package worked effectively. Championship leader Andrea Kimi Antonelli used the medium tyres while driving the latest version of the W17 with the new aerodynamic specification, whereas Russell took on an experimental role running the old-spec setup.

Track conditions proved tricky as drivers struggled with a lack of grip on a very dusty circuit layout, rendering the session largely unrepresentative of the conditions expected for qualifying and the grand prix. According to Crash.net, the track action remained relatively uneventful bar Nico Hulkenberg stopping at the end of the pit lane with a mechanical issue in his Audi.

Teams must now transition straight into competitive action with sprint qualifying up next. Singapore is hosting a sprint race weekend format for the first time in its history, raising the stakes significantly for the engineers and drivers alike.
