George Russell Downplays Antonelli Title Fight

Formula 1, Sportrik Media - George Russell has insisted that his relationship with Kimi Antonelli remains unaffected despite the growing intensity of their intra-team battle at Mercedes in the 2026 Formula 1 title fight.

Antonelli enters the Miami Grand Prix weekend with a nine-point advantage over Russell, having secured two victories compared to his team-mate’s single win before the April break. Despite this early championship dynamic, Mercedes is expected to remain a strong contender even as new regulations come into effect.

Neither Russell nor Antonelli has prior experience of leading a Formula 1 title campaign, although Mercedes as a team has managed similar situations in the past, most notably during the rivalry between Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg.

Addressing whether the championship context has influenced their relationship, Russell made it clear that there has been no shift in approach within the team environment.

“Not at all, to be honest. We are both professionals, and we still have a very good relationship. It’s not something we are even talking about,” Russell explained during a media session.

He added that discussions within Mercedes remain firmly centred on performance rather than championship implications, reflecting a structured approach to maintaining focus during the early phase of the season.

“Within the team, it’s not even being mentioned. The priority is extracting maximum performance from the car and improving every weekend,” he stated.

Russell also referenced his experience as a junior driver within Mercedes, recalling that during previous title battles, the emphasis was consistently placed on performance execution rather than championship calculations.

“When I was part of the team as a junior, even during intense fights with Ferrari, the championship itself wasn’t the focus. It was always about delivering performance and developing the car,” he added.

As the 2026 season progresses, Russell’s approach underlines a deliberate strategy to avoid external pressure, maintaining focus on technical execution and consistency as the key factors in what is shaping up to be a closely contested championship battle.
