At the very circuit where he claimed his first Formula 1 victory, Pierre Gasly has written another golden chapter in his career by securing his maiden pole position at Monza. The surprise result immediately reshaped the competitive landscape in a tense qualifying session.
In a thrilling Q3 shootout, Gasly edged out pre-session favorite George Russell by a mere 0.060s, denying the Mercedes driver a fifth pole of the year and putting Alpine on top of the timesheets.
Fierce Battle in the Decisive Session
Russell had initially set the pace with a 1m21.929s lap, ahead of Oscar Piastri, Gasly, and Charles Leclerc. The top ten was covered by less than two-tenths of a second, making slipstream positioning crucial. Russell had an ace up his sleeve with teammate Kimi Antonelli, who was set to start from the back due to an engine penalty, ready to give him a tow around the 5.8km track.
But Gasly played his cards perfectly, grabbing a slipstream from Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton and delivering an outstanding lap to leapfrog Russell. Piastri and Leclerc took fourth and fifth, followed by Hamilton and Max Verstappen. Antonelli finished seventh but will drop down due to his penalty, promoting Franco Colapinto to seventh.
Drama and Incidents at Turn 1
Meanwhile, Oscar Piastri had a disappointing outing. He failed to get a slipstream from teammate Lando Norris after running wide at Turn 1, ruining both their laps. Norris was left to punch a hole in the air by himself and could only manage ninth. Piastri may also face an investigation for blocking Liam Lawson.
