Funding for a Peter Brock-focused city festival has been officially approved by the New South Wales government. The event will take place on the Monday after this year's Bathurst 1000, on October 12, aiming to ease post-race traffic congestion.
The closure of the Great Western Highway at Victoria Pass leaves spectators without the option of taking the main route back to Sydney. This festival is a smart solution to encourage them to stay longer in Bathurst, while also providing an enhanced experience for racing fans.
Easing Road Pressure
Minister for Roads and Regional Transport, Jenny Aitchison, explained that this move responds to increasing traffic pressure. "We heard the proposal from Bathurst Regional Council and acted immediately. This extra day gives visitors a reason to stay longer, while spreading out the flow of departures," she said.
The event also coincides with the 20th anniversary of the death of Peter Brock, an Australian racing legend. A concert will be held, though details are yet to be announced. Bathurst Deputy Mayor Ben Fry called this support a real example of partnership between government and the local community.
This year's Bathurst 1000 will become a six-day event, starting from Tuesday afternoon. Infrastructure provided by Supercars will be used for the following Monday's event. Train services, coaches, and shuttle buses will connect Bathurst Station, Mount Panorama, and the CBD to ease visitor mobility.
