Reno Francot and Dries Van Langendonck stole the spotlight in the Formula Regional Europe (FREC) post-season test at the Red Bull Ring, Austria. Francot, driving for CL Motorsport, topped the morning session, while Van Langendonck struck back in the afternoon. The duo sent a clear message that they are ready for a fierce battle next season.
The morning belonged to Francot. Returning to the scene of his only win of the season back in April, the Dutchman set a best time of 1m26.262s, 0.170s ahead of Van Langendonck. Interestingly, his lap was almost four-tenths faster than his best qualifying lap during the FREC race weekend in April. He even improved his time three times within six minutes mid-session, showcasing impressive consistency and speed.
Behind Francot, MP Motorsport's Van Langendonck had to settle for second, followed by Kenzo Craigie of R-ace GP. Craigie briefly led the times after only 35 minutes of running but couldn't hold on. Meanwhile, Miguel Costa (Rodin Motorsport) finished fourth, ahead of Oleksandr Bondarev (R-ace GP) and Matteo Giaccardi (ART Grand Prix) in fifth and sixth.
Some drivers who missed the Paul Ricard test were back in action. MP Motorsport's Rocco Coronel and Kasper Schormans finished seventh and eleventh in the morning, respectively. Edu Robinson, now with ART Grand Prix, led the team's trio alongside Thibaut Ramaekers, with the pair taking eighth and ninth. Rodin's Alex Ninovic completed the top 10 after being the early pace-setter.
There were also new faces making their mark. RPM fielded Felipe Reijs and Kabir Anurag, replacing Fionn McLaughlin and Andre Rodriguez, alongside Emily Cotty. Tomass Stolcermanis, who previously tested with Prema, joined CL Motorsport. Ty Fisher, currently 11th in Spanish F4, joined the Italian team's lineup with Alp Aksoy and Oleksandr Savinkov. Meanwhile, Tom Ingram-Hill, a race winner in GB4, made his debut with G4 Racing and was the slowest overall.
The afternoon session was tighter. G4 Racing's Ingram-Hill and Rahim Alibhai initially led before Francot took over 40 minutes in. Van Amersfoort Racing's Scott Lindblom and Schormans traded the top spot, but Van Langendonck ultimately set a 1m25.730s with 15 minutes left to end the session on top. A red flag interrupted running, giving drivers a final six-minute window. Francot, eager to lead again, had to settle for second, less than a tenth shy of Van Langendonck. Schormans completed the afternoon podium in third, followed by Lindblom.
With these results, the competition for the new season is heating up. Francot and Van Langendonck have shown they are strong title contenders. This post-season test is crucial for teams and drivers to gather data and build momentum. Will they continue their dominance in the regular season? Only time will tell.
