Formula E Shuts Down 2027 Barcelona, Hints at 2028 Return

Formula E CEO Jeff Dodds has firmly dismissed reports that Barcelona could join the 2027 calendar, but he left the door open for a potential race in 2028 and beyond. The clarification comes after German outlet e-formel.de suggested that a race at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya could be held in April next year.

During a roundtable with select media, Dodds confirmed that Formula E has held discussions with the circuit and teams. All parties gave positive feedback, but ultimately Barcelona will not feature in the first season of the Gen4 era.

"We have had conversations with Barcelona," said Dodds. "I think I can say, categorically, and I might be surprised here—there's a 1% chance of that—but Barcelona won't make its way onto the calendar for next season. The calendar is pretty much locked down. We know that we've just announced a slight date change in Monaco to accommodate a request from the venue, but Barcelona won't be on the schedule next year. That doesn't mean it won't be on the schedule beyond next year, though."

Barcelona is seen as an attractive destination by Formula E, which has left the door open for it to appear in 2028, the second season of Gen4. However, the success of this year's debut race in Madrid makes Formula E reluctant to abandon the Spanish capital anytime soon. Jarama will return as a double-header next June.

The decision also impacts Barcelona's calendar, as the circuit will not host a Formula 1 Grand Prix next year due to a rotational agreement, with planned appearances in 2028, 2030, and 2032. This could make Formula E an appealing option to fill the gap in 2028.

Dodds added, "Whether that means it goes on alongside Madrid or on a rotational basis with Madrid, who knows? But I think we're excited by the prospect of the venue because we think it would be an interesting addition. Equally, Madrid put on such a great show for us this year that we would be very reluctant not to be racing there for the foreseeable future."

With the 2027 calendar nearly final, Formula E appears focused on existing markets while continuing to explore future expansion. Barcelona remains a strong candidate for 2028, but final decisions will depend on negotiations and circuit readiness.
