Formula 1 Confirms Rwanda GP for 2030s, Bringing Racing Back to Africa After Three Decades

The pinnacle of motorsport Formula 1 is officially set to return to the African continent in the 2030s following a landmark 10-year agreement to host a brand-new Grand Prix in Rwanda. This major announcement marks F1's first race on African soil since the 1993 South African Grand Prix held at Kyalami, ending decades of absence from a continent with a rich racing heritage. While the exact start date within the next decade remains unspecified, both F1 and the FIA have confirmed that preparations are already underway.

A dedicated, purpose-built circuit will be constructed in Bugusera, situated roughly 40 kilometers south of the Rwandan capital, Kigali. Comprehensive details regarding the initial race date and specific development milestones will be announced in due course. For years, F1 explored various avenues to stage a return to Africa, with Kyalami frequently positioned as the frontrunner. Despite persistent efforts and proposed circuit modifications to achieve the mandatory FIA Grade 1 status, a viable deal for South Africa never materialized.

In contrast, negotiations involving Rwandan officials progressed successfully, leading F1 to praise the nation for securing the right foundations and partnering with the sport for a sustainable future. Rwanda has steadily expanded its global sports portfolio in recent years by hosting major international tournaments and forging high-profile sponsorships. While international bodies like Amnesty International have raised concerns regarding the nation's political landscape, F1 emphasizes that the grand prix aims to establish a lasting legacy by boosting tourism, attracting foreign investment, and creating new community opportunities.

The prospect of an African race has long been championed by seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, who previously joked he would delay his retirement just to compete on the continent. However, with the Rwandan event slated for the early 2030s, it appears unlikely that Hamilton—currently 41—will still be on the grid. Rwandan President Paul Kagame hailed the agreement as a historic milestone for the region, stating that the long absence of premier motorsport from Africa has finally come to an end.

Echoing the positive sentiment, FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem described the initiative as an essential step for the global growth of motorsport, following his organization's previous visit to Kigali in 2024. F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali reinforced this view, highlighting that Africa has consistently remained part of the sport's long-term vision. Domenicali stressed that F1 was fully determined to return in the right way, ensuring a long-term commitment and a clear vision for meaningful local impact alongside their new partners.
