FIA Sets Court Date for Monaco GP Penalty Appeal
TO NEWS OVERVIEW
Antonelli, Hamilton and Hadjar completed the Monaco podium – but the result was changed after an appeal to the FIA

The FIA has scheduled a hearing for the International Court of Appeal after Red Bull and McLaren appealed against the decision to reinstate Pierre Gasly’s podium at the Monaco Grand Prix.

Several drivers were handed pit lane speeding penalties at this year’s Monaco GP due to a timing system error. Alpine successfully appealed two unserved time penalties for Pierre Gasly, reinstating his third-place finish after a post-race investigation concluded that the system had overstated the speeds at which drivers were traveling.

Alpine proved Gasly had not broken the speed limit and used their Right of Review to have the penalties overturned. Gasly’s podium was reinstated, with Isack Hadjar of Red Bull losing his inherited P3 finish.

However, this created an issue, as other drivers with similar penalties were unable to appeal. Lewis Hamilton, George Russell, Oscar Piastri, and Franco Colapinto were all penalized for allegedly exceeding the pit lane speed limit. But since those drivers served their penalties during the race, they could not be appealed or removed from their time. Gasly, by contrast, did not pit again, so the penalties were converted to time added to his final race time, meaning they could be appealed and removed.

Date Set for International Court of Appeal Hearing

Due to this inconsistency, McLaren and Red Bull lodged their intention to appeal in the week following the Monaco GP. They proceeded with the appeals to the International Court of Appeal four days later, and a date has now been set for the hearing.

The hearing will take place at the FIA’s headquarters in Paris on August 25th. The case will be heard behind closed doors at the request of the parties involved, but the decision will be published afterwards.
