A dramatic pre-race sequence unfolded as proceedings were delayed by 40 minutes following heavy rain, before the field was eventually released for two formation laps behind the Safety Car. Problems emerged almost immediately as several drivers slowed dramatically or came to a complete halt in the treacherous wet conditions.
Max Verstappen reported an unexpected loss of power at the front of the grid, while Lewis Hamilton, Esteban Ocon, and Valtteri Bottas all ground to a halt at various stages around the circuit. The resulting confusion left cars scattered at vastly different speeds, ultimately forcing race control to abort the start procedure entirely and direct the field back to the pit lane.
FIA single-seater director Nikolas Tombazis later confirmed that a software bug had left several cars completely unable to accelerate normally after slowing down heavily in the wet. There was a noticeable concertina effect between cars where some nearly stopped altogether, and the software glitch prevented power from being properly redeployed.

The governing body explained that the fault only surfaced because an unprecedented combination of unusual wet-weather circumstances occurred simultaneously during the formation laps. With the current generation of cars having experienced very little genuine wet running in competitive scenarios, those specific conditions simply could not be fully replicated during prior testing phases.
Once the root cause was identified, the FIA issued revised software parameters to all teams during the delay, allowing engineers to update their power units before another start attempt was made. According to Speedcafe, Tombazis acknowledged the frustration of waiting spectators while praising the rapid technical response under intense time pressure.
