The FIA has officially declared a heat hazard for the Formula 1 Bahrain Grand Prix, which will take place at the Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia this weekend. The decision comes as temperatures are forecast to reach the low 30s Celsius, accompanied by high humidity and chances of rain throughout the race weekend.
With this declaration, teams are required to fit components of the Driver Cooling System on the cars. Drivers can choose to wear a specialised cooling vest during the race, but if they opt not to, an additional ballast will be required to account for the extra weight. The regulations come into effect whenever temperatures are predicted to exceed 31°C at any point of the race, as happened in Austria and Italy this year.
This is the third race in 2026 to have a heat hazard declared. Sepang is an especially physically demanding track for drivers. The circuit features long straights, fast corners, and heavy braking zones, which combine with Malaysia's hot and humid climate to create a significant physical challenge.
Some drivers, including Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton, have previously called the optional cooling vest unnecessary and ineffective over a full race distance. Nevertheless, the FIA is taking a precautionary approach to ensure driver safety.
The decision also considers technical and strategic aspects. With the added weight from the cooling system or ballast, car balance could be affected, so teams must adjust their setups. Tyre management becomes even more crucial as high track temperatures can accelerate degradation.
Competition at this Bahrain GP is expected to be even tighter in extreme weather conditions. Teams like Ferrari and Mercedes must be precise in planning pit stops and engine cooling. Meanwhile, drivers are required to maintain extra fitness.
With the heat hazard officially in place, the FIA reaffirms its commitment to driver safety without compromising competition. Now it's up to the teams and drivers to adapt to the conditions.
