The FIA has officially confirmed a series of grid penalties for the Bahrain Grand Prix, which takes place in Malaysia this weekend. As a result, Saturday's qualifying session will not reflect the true grid order, as several drivers must serve penalties.
The penalties range from minor to one that exceeds the entire 2026 grid. Arvid Lindblad, Isack Hadjar, and Franco Colapinto are the three drivers set to drop down the order.
For Hadjar, qualifying is particularly crucial. The Frenchman only has a five-place grid penalty for using his seventh engine of the year. He still has a chance to limit the damage by maximizing his qualifying performance, something Colapinto and Lindblad cannot do.

Colapinto already faced an uphill battle coming into the weekend. He had incurred a five-place grid penalty for causing the dramatic Safety Car restart crash in Baku, which took himself, teammate Pierre Gasly, and McLaren's Lando Norris out of the race. But his woes worsened on Friday when the FIA confirmed an additional 10-place drop for using his fifth engine of the year. The total 15-place penalty guarantees either a back row or pit lane start.
Meanwhile, Arvid Lindblad received a much heavier punishment. The British driver must serve a 30-place grid penalty for using his fifth engine, turbocharger, and exhaust set. Each individual component change incurs a ten-place grid penalty, and added together, the total exceeds the current F1 grid.
This FIA decision clearly affects team strategies and drivers' chances in the race. For the penalized teams, the main focus will be on maximizing car performance and race strategy to score as many points as possible, despite starting from unfavorable positions.
With these penalties, the battle at the Bahrain GP in Malaysia is expected to be fierce, especially in the midfield and back. The penalized drivers must work extra hard to break into the front, while their rivals will look to capitalize on the situation to achieve the best possible results.
