Mohammed Ben Sulayem has responded to comments made by Max Verstappen regarding a potential exit from Formula 1, expressing confidence that the Red Bull Racing driver will remain in the sport.

Verstappen has previously voiced dissatisfaction with the direction of the current regulations, particularly the 50-50 split between internal combustion and electrical power. His concerns have been centred more on driving experience than outright car performance.

"Formula 1 is bigger than anyone. Presidents come and go, teams come and go, and drivers come and go."

From a regulatory standpoint, the new technical era has introduced significant changes to car characteristics, especially in power delivery and energy management complexity. These factors directly influence how drivers interact with the car on track.

Ben Sulayem suggested that Verstappen’s reaction is part of the natural competitive cycle, where shifts in performance and dominance can alter perspectives within the sport.

"When you are winning and suddenly you are not, of course you react. It’s part of the cycle."

He also emphasised that while Verstappen is a key figure in the sport, Formula 1’s long-term stability does not depend on any single individual, reinforcing the FIA’s broader governance perspective.

Ben Sulayem nonetheless praised Verstappen’s abilities, particularly his focus and mental strength, describing him as one of the most formidable drivers on the grid.

"He is very strong mentally and extremely focused in the way he drives."

With the backdrop of recent seasons and evolving competitiveness, the FIA views Verstappen’s comments as a reaction to current circumstances, while attention now turns to how regulations and team performance develop through the remainder of the 2026 campaign.
