The FIA World Motor Sport Council has officially approved rigorous new regulations requiring Formula 1 teams to distinctly separate their grand prix personnel from non-F1 staff starting next season. motorsport's governing body intervened to eliminate practices where teams leverage staff and facilities from external activities to bypass the strict financial regulations.
This decisive regulatory update aims to level the playing field between independent grand prix outfits and automotive giants with diverse motorsport portfolios. Major manufacturing conglomerates must now function with absolute independence from their parent companies, ensuring complete transparency within the established financial boundaries.
Introduced within five new articles of the 2027 operational regulations, the primary objective is eliminating the subtle transfer of know-how between the core grand prix division and secondary business units. Previously, engineering expertise could be split across multiple programs, allowing expenditures to be hidden within product development, WEC, Formula E, or marine projects.
The governing body is implementing severe restrictions regarding technological assets, including wind tunnels, simulators, test benches, and IT infrastructure. Non-grand prix personnel are strictly barred from entering the primary factory, and internal staff cannot visit colleagues operating in external divisions.
Furthermore, transferring personnel requires new contractual agreements accompanied by disabled company badges and deactivated email addresses, alongside a mandatory one-year waiting period for returning employees. Individuals transitioning into the grand prix squad from external programs must complete a strict three-month gardening leave.
