The brake failure that ended Lewis Hamilton's race at the Spanish Grand Prix has left Ferrari searching for answers. Team boss Fred Vasseur has confirmed that the team will conduct a full investigation to uncover the root cause of the issue that made the brake pedal go long and left Hamilton struggling to slow the car.
Hamilton was forced to retire early in the Spanish Grand Prix. After the race, he explained that his brake pedal was getting longer, making it increasingly difficult to stop the car. Vasseur revealed that the team is still in the dark about the exact cause. "At this stage, we don't yet know the exact cause of the brake system issue that forced him to retire," he said. "But we will investigate it thoroughly."
The incident was a heavy blow for Ferrari, who had hoped to maximise their car's potential at the Madrid circuit. Yet amid the disappointment, there was a glimmer of hope from Charles Leclerc. The Monegasque driver finished fourth after running an alternative strategy: starting on the hard tyre and pushing for almost 50 laps before pitting.
Vasseur explained that the split strategy was designed to capitalise on a potential safety car or red flag. "We knew there was a reasonable chance of a safety car or a red flag, so we decided to extend the stint and keep that opportunity open," he said. "A red flag could have put us in a position to fight for the win, while a late safety car could have given us a shot at third. In the end neither happened, but I think it was absolutely worth trying and Charles delivered a very solid performance."
With this result, Hamilton remains third in the drivers' championship, with Leclerc behind in fifth. The brake failure serves as a wake-up call for Ferrari that reliability remains a major concern. A thorough investigation is expected to prevent similar incidents in future races.
On the other hand, Leclerc's performance shows that aggressive strategy can be a weapon for Ferrari to stay competitive. Although it didn't yield a podium, the decision to extend the stint proved that the team can think creatively under pressure. Now, attention turns to how Ferrari will fix the car's reliability while maintaining the positive momentum from their race strategy.
