Ferrari started the 2026 season with high hopes, but their power unit project has been labeled an 'emergency project'. Ferrari must act quickly to stay competitive at the top.
Charles Leclerc opened the season with a podium in Australia, followed by Lewis Hamilton's first podium with Ferrari in China. The peak came when Hamilton took his maiden win in Barcelona, consolidating his title credentials against Mercedes.
However, Ferrari's performance dipped afterward. Their chassis and aero concept were competitive early on, but rivals caught up. The main weakness was the troubled 2026 power unit.
Reports suggest Ferrari's 2026 engine project was in dire straits from the start. Internal conflicts and the departure of key figures like Wolf Zimmerman and Lars Schmidt in the winter left the team fighting with one arm tied behind their back. The project has even been called an 'emergency project'.
Despite ADUO advantages allowing two upgrades on the 2026 engine, Team Principal Fred Vasseur admitted the team still lacked 'pure pace' compared to rivals. He also revealed that Ferrari will have a completely new engine for 2027.
“We were not expecting to recover with ADUO 1 or ADUO 2,” Vasseur said. “We are doing small steps, but what you have to keep in mind is that if you make a small step on the engine, even if you make a couple of horsepower, it’s a good step on the grid. That means that now we will have a new engine next year. For sure, the target is to catch up, to catch up as soon as possible, but I was not expecting that in two months we will recover the delta with Mercedes.”
Meanwhile, Hamilton's bid for an unprecedented eighth title seems to have come to a premature end this season after an early retirement from the Spanish GP. Ferrari still faces a long process to fix their speed deficit.
