In a recent discussion on the Ingegneri del Giovedi channel, Federico Albano and Carlo Platella dissected how the lack of engine power not only makes the car slow on straights but also disrupts energy management. When the engine cannot produce enough peak power, drivers are forced to compensate with more aggressive energy recovery strategies, which ultimately sacrifices cornering speed and inflates lap times.
However, another factor exacerbates the situation in Madrid. The first sector of this circuit is known for its high and aggressive kerbs, demanding a suspension that can absorb impacts well. Ferrari chose a setup that was too stiff, perhaps to chase performance in fast corners, but the consequence was a car that was difficult to control and lost traction in areas where it should have been an advantage.
The combination of insufficient power and the wrong suspension setup made it difficult for Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz to find a rhythm. In the first sector, the car often bounced and lost contact with the asphalt, while on the straights they were sitting ducks for rivals. This is not just a power unit issue; it's a problem with the overall package that needs reevaluation.
The engineers noted that Ferrari actually has a competitive chassis, but when forced to compromise with less engine power, they are caught in a vicious circle.
