Zandvoort kicked off the Dutch Grand Prix weekend with a single free practice session full of intrigue. Ferrari, without using the much-talked-about new floor, looked impressive right from the start. Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton placed the SF-26 fourth and fifth, but more importantly, the car's balance felt solid from the very first lap.
Interestingly, three of the top four teams appear very close. McLaren and Mercedes seemed to be trading times, while Ferrari followed with a strong pace. Red Bull, on the other hand, continued to struggle, especially with balance. The rapidly evolving track conditions made lap times fluctuate, but the overall impression is clear: this weekend could turn into a thrilling four-team fight.
Ferrari: Solid Foundation, But Still Work to Do
From Ferrari's side, the most positive aspect was the car's balance, which felt right from the start. The front end was strong, the rear stable even under full traction, all while the track lacked ideal grip. Low temperatures seem to help the SF-26 perform more comfortably, which could be an advantage at the technical Zandvoort circuit.
However, there were small differences between the two drivers. Hamilton looked more confident with his tire preparation at the start of the lap, especially in the middle sector full of fast corners. Leclerc struggled at Turn 1 but showed brilliant pace in the final sector, setting the fastest time in Sector 3. This indicates untapped potential.
The weakness that still remains is maximizing the soft tires for a single quick lap. The gap to McLaren and Mercedes is small, but in qualifying, every tenth will count. On the other hand, both Ferrari drivers' race pace simulations were very competitive, offering hope for a strong race strategy.
Another interesting decision was not using the new floor by either driver. They chose to save the component to avoid risk, given only one unit is available. If current performance is already good, will they dare to fit it for qualifying? That question will be answered later.
McLaren Continues to Improve, Red Bull Still Struggles
Lando Norris and the McLaren team showed encouraging progress. The MCL40 is becoming easier to handle, with the front end continuing to improve and providing confidence in fast corners. They are clearly strong candidates to fight for the top positions this weekend.
Meanwhile, Red Bull still looks confused. The car's balance is not ideal, and they are trailing the other three teams by a considerable margin. This could be a long weekend for the defending champions unless they find a quick solution before qualifying.
With conditions so tight, who will come out on top at Zandvoort? All eyes are on qualifying to set the tone for the battle. One thing is certain: this season's competition is getting more exciting by the race.
