Fernando Alonso has opened up about the internal thought process surrounding his Formula 1 future as his contract with Aston Martin F1 Team approaches its expiration at the end of the 2026 season.

The current campaign has proven extremely difficult for Alonso and the Aston Martin-Honda project, with the Silverstone-based outfit struggling for both competitiveness and reliability during the opening rounds.

The situation has fuelled speculation that the two-time world champion could choose to retire from Formula 1 at the end of the year and once again explore other forms of motorsport.

Alonso is already highly familiar with racing outside Formula 1 after previously competing in the Indy 500, the World Endurance Championship, and the Dakar Rally during his F1 hiatus in 2019 and 2020.

When asked whether those experiences make his future decision easier, Alonso admitted he already understands exactly what other championships can offer.

“It helps because I know what is outside Formula 1,” Alonso told media including RacingNews365.

The Spanish driver even suggested that the racing quality outside Formula 1 can, in certain aspects, be more enjoyable.

“The type of racing is arguably better than Formula 1. That’s why some drivers now are finding more fun outside Formula 1,” Alonso explained.

Alonso also reflected on his first IndyCar experience in 2017, which he believes completely changed his perspective on racing beyond Formula 1.

However, the Aston Martin driver stressed that Formula 1 still offers a unique atmosphere and level of intensity unmatched elsewhere in motorsport.

“There are moments in your life and career when you need Formula 1 because beyond the driving and adrenaline, you have the complete package,” he said.

According to Alonso, the pressure, sponsors, global exposure, and intensity surrounding the Formula 1 paddock continue to separate the championship from every other category.

“At this stage of my life, I can choose what truly makes me happiest,” Alonso concluded.
