Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Fernando Alonso will not take part in the opening free practice session of the 2026 Australian Grand Prix after Aston Martin confirmed a suspected power unit issue on his AMR26. The setback adds to a difficult start to the season for the Silverstone-based team in its new engine partnership era with Honda.
The team confirmed that the suspected problem with the power unit prevented Alonso’s car from running at the start of FP1 at Albert Park. As a result, the two-time world champion is set to lose at least an hour of valuable track time during the opening session of the race weekend.
Aston Martin has already faced concerns over performance and reliability since the start of the campaign. The AMR26 has reportedly been lacking power while also suffering from reliability issues, complicating the team’s early progress in its new technical phase with Honda as the power unit supplier.

Team principal Adrian Newey previously revealed that vibrations from the power unit could pose a serious concern for the drivers.
“The vibrations from the power unit could lead to permanent nerve damage in the drivers’ hands.”
The issue has forced the team to significantly restrict its on-track running while engineers work to resolve the problem. Aston Martin is now focused on identifying the root cause before the next sessions of the Australian Grand Prix weekend.
The start of FP1 at Albert Park also saw other disruptions. Rookie driver Arvid Lindblad was stranded at the pit exit on his debut for Racing Bulls, while both drivers from McLaren also encountered issues with their new power units introduced for the 2026 Formula 1 season.
The opening practice session in Melbourne therefore began with several technical setbacks across the grid, while Aston Martin faces additional pressure to resolve the AMR26’s problems before the remainder of the race weekend.
