Gresini rider Fermin Aldeguer has successfully undergone surgery on a right-hand fracture sustained during a chaotic opening-lap crash at the Indonesian Grand Prix. The Mandalika weekend proved to be an exceptionally grueling chapter for the young Spaniard, marred by multiple incidents that ultimately compromised his physical condition.
The troubles for the Gresini contender began early with a fall during Free Practice 1 on Friday. It marked the first of four separate crashes across the race weekend, culminating in the heavy tumble at Turn 16 on lap two of Sunday's main race at the Pertamina Mandalika International Circuit—ironically the very venue where he celebrated his maiden premier-class victory last season.
Adding an extra layer of misfortune to the dramatic exit, the rider reportedly struck the asphalt in frustration while sliding across the track surface. This seemingly minor emotional reaction is believed to have ultimately caused or significantly exacerbated the fracture to the first metacarpal bone in his right hand.

Taking to Instagram on Tuesday, Aldeguer confirmed to his followers that the surgical procedure on his right hand was completed successfully. However, he now faces a massive race against time to prove his fitness, with the upcoming Australian Grand Prix at Phillip Island looming just 10 days away.
This early retirement registers as Aldeguer's second Sunday DNF of the year, following another violent opening-lap incident earlier in the season at the Hungarian Grand Prix. It prolongs a deeply disjointed 2026 campaign that has already forced him to sit out four rounds due to persistent and recurring injuries to his left leg.
The current physical setbacks highlight a starkly contrasting sophomore campaign for the talented Spaniard. Having secured only a single podium finish so far this year—a third place in Barcelona—his current form stands worlds apart from his stellar rookie year in 2025, where he finished eighth overall and claimed the Rookie of the Year honors. As the championship heads into the final five rounds of 2026, he currently sits tenth in the standings while fighting for a swift return.
