MotoGP, Sportrik Media - Fermin Aldeguer and Gresini Racing are at the center of a shifting landscape in MotoGP 2026 following Ducati’s decision to move the Spaniard to VR46 Racing Team for the 2027 season.

The move represents more than a standard rider transfer, reflecting the internal balancing act within Ducati’s satellite ecosystem. For several seasons, the Borgo Panigale manufacturer has effectively managed two competing structures in VR46 and Gresini, each with distinct ambitions and strategic priorities. Tensions between the teams have been consistent, driven by competition for resources, technical status, and long-term positioning.

The situation intensified after Aldeguer, one of Ducati’s most promising assets following his rookie campaign, was reassigned despite Gresini’s intention to retain him. The impact is amplified by the parallel departure of Alex Marquez, forcing the Faenza-based team into a significant rebuild of its rider line-up.

“There is disappointment because we wanted to continue the project with Fermin. He has developed quickly and became a key part of the team,” a Gresini source told Motorsport.com.

From Ducati’s perspective, the decision aligns with a broader restructuring following Pramac’s exit from its satellite programme. VR46 has inherited factory-supported status, granting priority access to the latest machinery and closer integration with Ducati’s development pathway. This elevated position has become central to Ducati’s long-term strategy, even if recent on-track results have not consistently reflected that advantage.

Aldeguer’s contractual situation further explains the move. Directly tied to Ducati until 2028, the manufacturer retains control over his career trajectory. Financial considerations also played a role, with VR46 operating on a larger budget than Gresini, enabling a more competitive package. Additionally, Aldeguer is expected to receive top-tier machinery comparable to that of Marc Marquez, reinforcing his role within Ducati’s future plans.

On-track performance adds another layer to the dynamic. Over the past two seasons, Gresini has often outperformed VR46 in terms of results and visibility, particularly through Marc Marquez and Alex Marquez. However, Ducati’s strategic alignment appears to prioritize structural hierarchy and long-term integration over short-term competitive outcomes.

Aldeguer’s departure prompted Gresini to explore alternative manufacturers. Discussions with Honda revisited a historically successful partnership that delivered runner-up finishes with Sete Gibernau and Marco Melandri. However, these talks did not evolve into a concrete opportunity.

A return to Aprilia was not viable due to strained relations following their split in 2021, when Aprilia transitioned into a full factory entry. Meanwhile, Yamaha remains uncompetitive relative to Ducati’s current performance benchmark, limiting its attractiveness as an alternative.

Given these constraints, renewing the partnership with Ducati has emerged as the most viable option for Gresini. Technical stability, access to competitive machinery, and operational continuity outweigh the internal tensions that persist within Ducati’s satellite structure.

From a rider market perspective, Gresini has begun reshaping its future line-up, with Dani Holgado set to join as part of a long-term development approach. The Spanish rider’s progression in Moto2 positions him as a strategic investment, though replacing Aldeguer’s immediate impact remains a significant challenge.

Overall, this situation highlights the evolving structure of MotoGP ahead of the 2027 regulations. With technical convergence expected across manufacturers, differentiation will increasingly depend on team structure, factory support, and in-season development capacity. For Gresini, maintaining its Ducati partnership ensures competitiveness, even as internal political and strategic complexities continue to shape the paddock heading into the next phase of the championship.
