Fabio Di Giannantonio still considers his 2026 MotoGP campaign an amazing season despite his first Sunday DNF of the year at Sachsenring dropping the VR46 Ducati rider from third to fifth in the championship.
The mistake at the German MotoGP also cost Di Giannantonio his status as the highest-ranked Ducati rider, with Marc Marquez moving ahead of him going into the summer break. Even so, the Italian remains only 24 points away from the championship lead.
“We are doing an amazing season, a lot of podiums, including Sprint races, and a lot of good results,” Di Giannantonio said. “The speed is always there; that's the most important thing. It's not just a ‘spark’, it's every track that we go to we are performing well.”
The numbers support that assessment. The VR46 rider has scored 42 more points than he had at the same stage last season, when he eventually finished sixth in the championship.
Di Giannantonio has also recorded eight top-three finishes this year, including a Grand Prix victory in Catalunya. That consistency is central to his belief that his current level is not dependent on isolated strong weekends.
“So if you see this big picture, I think we are doing an amazing season. Then, also, we are just 24 points from the lead. I'm enjoying a lot every moment,” he said.
The 2026 campaign is also significant for Di Giannantonio's longer-term career after he was confirmed as a factory KTM rider for 2027. Before that move, however, his immediate focus remains on sustaining his strong form with VR46 through the second half of the season.
MotoGP resumes at Silverstone this weekend, giving Di Giannantonio his first opportunity to respond to the Sachsenring DNF and reapply pressure to the riders ahead of him in the championship fight.
