The opening practice session at the Circuit of the Americas kicked off the 2026 United States Grand Prix weekend by delivering a fascinating technical battle at the sharp end of the grid. Max Verstappen immediately established himself as the benchmark pace-setter, while Ferrari arrived in Texas with a major aerodynamic upgrade package that exposed a stark contrast between cornering prowess and straight-line speed.
Analyzing the initial telemetry data from this first running, the SF-26 machine proved exceptionally competitive through medium and high-speed turns. The increased downforce load is clearly doing its job, providing solid balance and strong lateral grip that allows Charles Leclerc to showcase incredible front-end stability through the signature sweeping sections of the Austin circuit.
However, this superior cornering performance comes at a heavy cost on the straightaways, where the red cars suffered a concerning top-speed deficit. Leclerc dropped double-digit kilometers per hour compared to the reigning world champion along the acceleration zones, losing massive chunks of lap time strictly in a straight line due to aerodynamic drag or deployment strategies.

Meanwhile, Red Bull Racing once again demonstrated the supreme aerodynamic efficiency of their package. Even though Verstappen's fastest lap time was ultimately deleted for track limits, the underlying pace confirmed they remain the clear favorites heading into the remainder of the race weekend.
Elsewhere in the pit lane, Mercedes appeared slightly on the back foot during this initial session. Engineers across the paddock now face a crucial race against time to optimize setups ahead of the vital qualifying sessions.
