In the Sepang paddock, the spotlight is undoubtedly on Mercedes with their first major development package since the Canadian GP. But don't be fooled—rival teams are not sitting idle. Ferrari, Red Bull, and McLaren have all prepared specific updates to tackle the scorching Malaysian circuit. This is not just a speed contest; it's a battle of strategy and aerodynamics in the sweltering heat.
Ferrari: Focus on Additional Aerodynamic Load
In Maranello, Ferrari are actually preparing a larger package scheduled to debut during the American triple-header. Nevertheless, for Malaysia, the team brought a small but significant change to the SF-26. An additional flap is mounted on top of the cascade profile in the rear wheel group, beside the diffuser. The goal is clear: increase aerodynamic load, particularly through the interaction between the cascade elements and the rear extractor. Attention to the rear area is nothing new—previously in Madrid, Ferrari introduced a new cover for the rear suspension arms.
Red Bull: Maximizing Outwash Effect
Meanwhile, Red Bull continue to invest resources in development. At Sepang, they introduced a new configuration for the elements on the floor inlet side. The horizontal flaps remain, but are now accompanied by two full vertical bulkheads and a shorter one. The aim is to maximize the outwash effect, directing airflow outward to keep front-wheel turbulence away from the floor. This Malaysian update completes the package partly introduced in Baku, which touched the floor and bodywork.

McLaren: Adapting to Hot Weather
Unlike the other two, the changes on the MCL40 are more of an adaptation to Malaysia's high temperatures. The reigning world champions focused on ensuring the Mercedes power unit stays cool by opening the grilles on the side of the engine cover. An alternative panel is fitted to the bodywork, which had previously undergone a major transformation with the Baku package. McLaren's main priority remains validating the developments introduced in Azerbaijan. The papaya team hopes to challenge Mercedes until the end of the season, despite the Silver Arrows' continuous updates.
Interestingly, the flood of updates from all top teams shows that current cars still have room for development. Moreover, the knowledge gained this year will be highly valuable for the 2027 technical regulations. The competition in Malaysia is not just about who is fastest on track, but also who is smartest in the development race.
