F1 Flashback 2006: Fernando Alonso Secures World Title As Michael Schumacher Barrows Out

Exactly 20 years ago, Fernando Alonso successfully claimed his second Formula 1 world championship title at the Brazilian Grand Prix, an emotional weekend that also marked the final chapter of Michael Schumacher's initial career in top-flight motorsport. The intense championship battle between Renault and Ferrari reached its dramatic climax at Interlagos, concluding a grueling season of intense technical and sporting rivalry.

Heading into the season finale, the championship scales heavily favored the Spanish driver. Schumacher's engine failure from the lead at Suzuka had turned a potential two-point advantage into a 10-point deficit, meaning the Ferrari racer desperately needed victory while his rival failed to score.

That difficult mission took a turn for the worse when a fuel pressure issue struck during Q3, relegating the German ace to 10th on the starting grid while Alonso lined up fourth. "I don't know what we can do," he remarked after qualifying. "I don't know how the race will develop. It is hard to predict something, but I will try my best. It is much more difficult starting from 10th, but of course I will try."

Despite the immense odds, Ferrari's technical leadership remained vocal about potential miracles. "Let's not forget that in the past, Michael has managed to win races starting even further back on the grid," noted the team's technical director. Though statistically rare, the legendary driver proved precisely why that belief existed once the race got underway.

He jumped from 10th to seventh on the opening lap, then sliced through the field to hunt down his championship rival before a minor contact caused a rear-left puncture. Plunged down to 20th and over a minute behind the leaders, the iconic red machine launched an unforgettable charge through the field, overtaking multiple opponents to finish fourth in a chaotic final Grand Prix.
